For new bachelor’s degree students, the academic year begins the last week of August with an English Refresher course. Regular classes start immediately after the Ethiopian New Year. The school year finishes the last week of May. There is a short vacation between semesters from late-December to late-January and a long vacation from June through August. National holidays are honored. A calendar with the specific dates for the academic year is posted. For questions regarding the academic calendar, see the Registrar’s office. There are two semesters in each academic year. Courses are offered each semester beginning with two-week block modules followed by a 12 to 15-week regular semester. The length of daily classes depends on the number of credit hours being earned but is usually three hours per week for a 3-credit course. For a 3-credit course, the student will meet with their instructor for a minimum of 36 contact hours during the semester.
During the regular 15-week semester, courses convene every other day. Classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, or Tuesdays and Thursdays. Friday block courses meet for three hours, one day per week. Afternoon and evening courses are offered for extension students who are unable to attend classes during the weekdays.
Below are schedules for a block session and for courses offered during a regular semester. (The administration has the right to modify the block schedule.) The same daily schedule is followed for Monday-Wednesday and Tuesday-Thursday classes.
